LAW ENFORCE/OFFICERS:  Provides relative to training for part-time law enforcement
officers
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 40:2405(A)(1), relative to peace officer training requirements;2
to require part-time peace officers to complete certain certified training programs;3
and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 40:2405(A)(1) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:6
ยง2405.  Peace officer training requirements; reimbursement by peace officer7
A.(1) Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, any person8
who begins employment as a  peace officer or part-time peace officer, in Louisiana9
subsequent to January 1, 1986, must successfully complete a certified training10
program approved by the council and successfully pass a council-approved11
comprehensive examination within one calendar year from the date of initial12
employment.  Any person who fails to comply with this requirement shall be13
prohibited from exercising the authority of a peace officer; however, such persons14
shall not be prohibited from performing administrative duties.15

Abstract: Requires part-time peace officers to complete a certified training program
approved by the Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Present law requires any person who begins employment as a peace officer in Louisiana
subsequent to Jan. 1, 1986, to successfully complete a certified training program approved
by the council and successfully pass a council-approved comprehensive examination within
one calendar year from the date of initial employment.
Present law provides that any person who fails to comply with this requirement shall be
prohibited from exercising the authority of a peace officer; however, such persons shall not
be prohibited from performing administrative duties.
Proposed law retains present law and extends these requirements to part-time peace officers.
