BOARDS/COMMISSIONS: Requires state-affiliated physicians to serve on the State
Medical Disability Board upon request of the Firefighters' Retirement System
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 11:219(C) and R.S. 17:1519.17.1, relative to the State Medical Disability2
Board; to require physicians affiliated with a state hospital or medical clinic to serve3
on the State Medical Disability Board upon request of the Firefighters' Retirement4
System; to provide conditions for physician affiliation with a Louisiana State5
University Health Sciences Center; to provide for validity of certain requests to6
physicians for service on the State Medical Disability Board; and to provide for7
related matters.8
Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published9
as provided by Article X, Section 29(C) of the Constitution10
of Louisiana.11
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:12
Section 1.  R.S. 11:219(C) is hereby enacted to read as follows:13
§219.  State Medical Disability Board14

C. Each state-affiliated physician as defined in R.S. 17:1519.17.1 is required16
to serve on the State Medical Disability Board upon request of the Firefighters'17
Retirement System. No such request shall be valid unless it is submitted in writing18
to the physician and is signed by the chairman of the board of trustees of the19

Section 2.  R.S. 17:1519.17.1 is hereby enacted to read as follows:1
§1519.17.1. Physicians of Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center2
medical centers and clinics; conditional requirement to serve on State3
Medical Disability Board4
A. For purposes of this Section, "state-affiliated physician" means any5
physician licensed to practice medicine by the Louisiana State Board of Medical6
Examiners who meets either of the following criteria:7
(1)  Is a member of the faculty of an LSU Health Sciences Center.8
(2) Has admitting privileges or regularly engages in the practice of medicine9
at any hospital or medical clinic of an LSU Health Sciences Center medical center10
and is employed by either of the following:11
(a)  The state of Louisiana.12
(b) A private entity operating an LSU Health Sciences Center medical center13
through a cooperative endeavor agreement or other contractual arrangement with the14
state of Louisiana.15
B. As a condition of his affiliation with an LSU Health Sciences Center, each16
state-affiliated physician is hereby required to serve on the State Medical Disability17
Board pursuant to receipt of a request for such service that conforms with the18
provisions of R.S. 11:219(C).19
Section 3. This Act shall become effective upon signature by the governor or, if not20
signed by the governor, upon expiration of the time for bills to become law without signature21
by the governor, as provided by Article III, Section 18 of the Constitution of Louisiana.  If22
vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become23

Abstract: Requires physicians affiliated with LSU Health Sciences Centers to serve on the
State Medical Disability Board upon request of the Firefighters' Retirement System.
Proposed law provides that for the purposes of proposed law, "state-affiliated physician"
means any physician licensed to practice medicine by the La. State Board of Medical
Examiners who meets either of the following criteria:
(1)Is a member of the faculty of an LSU Health Sciences Center.
(2)Has admitting privileges or regularly engages in the practice of medicine at any
hospital or medical clinic of an LSU Health Sciences Center medical center and is
employed by either of the following:
(a)The state of Louisiana.
(b)A private entity operating an LSU Health Sciences Center medical center
through a cooperative endeavor agreement or other contractual arrangement
with the state of Louisiana.
Proposed law requires state-affiliated physicians to serve on the State Medical Disability
Board if requested to do so by the Firefighters' Retirement System (FRS), and makes such
service a condition of the physician's affiliation with an LSU Health Sciences Center.
Provides that in order to be valid, any such request to a physician by FRS must be in writing
and signed by the chairman of the FRS board of trustees.
Effective upon signature of governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
