SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Tuesday, May 6, 2014, as Kingsley House
Day at the legislature
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize Tuesday, May 6, 2014, as Kingsley House Day at the Legislature of Louisiana.2
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Kingsley House and to recognize May 6,3
2014, as Kingsley House Day; and4
WHEREAS, Kingsley House, founded in 1896, serves individuals of all ages and5
offers services in thirteen parishes throughout the state; and6
WHEREAS, the mission of Kingsley House is to "educate children, strengthen7
families, and build communities"; and8
WHEREAS, Kingsley House launched the very first kindergarten and summer school9
programs in the state and has promoted education in the form of the Head Start and Early10
Head Start preschool programs; and11
WHEREAS, the youth services program and an after-school program provide12
activities for children between the ages of five and seventeen; these programs promote13
psychosocial skills building, creative arts, success, and respect for others while offering14
tutoring, mentoring, and drugs and violence prevention activities; and15
WHEREAS, Kingsley House Family Life Services offers various programs geared16
towards counseling, therapy, reintegration into the community, and the Adult Services17
Program provides assistance to senior citizens and medically fragile adults; and18
WHEREAS, the Magic Johnson Foundation Community Empowerment Center, the19
only facility of its kind in the state, provides the community with free access to the20 HLS 14RS-4412	ORIGINAL

technology and services that the center has to offer, thereby offering access to Internet1
research, word processing, and other capacity-building activities; and2
WHEREAS, Kingsley House merits special recognition for providing community3
services for over one hundred seventeen years and for making a significant impact on the4
lives of the children and families that it serves.5
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby6
recognize Tuesday, May 6, 2014, as Kingsley House Day at the legislature.7
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted8
to Keith Liederman, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Kingsley House.9
