ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 8 BY REPRESENTATIVE PUGH AND SENATOR WHI TE A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To recognize May 8, 2014, as Elmer's Candy Day in the state of Louisiana. WHEREAS, Elmer Chocolate, located in Ponchatoula, is currently the second largest heart box manufacturer in the country; and WHEREAS, Elmer Chocolate produces Easter favorites such as Gold Brick, Heavenly Hash, and Pecan Eggs, all of which outsell national leaders five to one along the Gulf Coast; and WHEREAS, the forerunner of Elmer Chocolate was the Miller Candy Corporation, which was founded in New Orleans in 1855 by former pastry chef Christopher Henry Miller; and WHEREAS, the Miller Candy Corporation became the Elmer Candy Corporation when Miller's son-in-law and business partner Augustus Elmer brought his sons into the fold; and WHEREAS, Elmer Candy subsequently increased its national presence by adding several new factories and introducing a wide variety of confections and snacks, many of which are still favorites today; and WHEREAS, in the early 1960s, Roy Nelson became a partner in the enterprise, and purchased the entire company from the Elmer family and encouraged his son Allan to join the endeavor; and WHEREAS, the two men centralized operations by opening a manufacturing facility in Ponchatoula and refocused the company's offerings, concentrating on seasonal chocolates rather than everyday candy and snacks; and WHEREAS, Elmer Chocolate today continues to create sweet memories for new generations of candy lovers. ENROLLEDHCR NO. 8 Page 2 of 2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize May 8, 2014, as Elmer's Candy Day in the state of Louisiana to recognize the contributions of Elmer Chocolate to the state.
