SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Wednesday, April 30, 2014, as La. Dental
Hygienists' Association Day at the state capitol, commends the association, and
celebrates 101 years of the dental hygiene profession
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Wednesday, April 30, 2014, as Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association Day2
at the state capitol, to commend the Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association, and3
to celebrate one hundred one years of the dental hygiene profession.4
WHEREAS, 2014 marks the celebration of one hundred one years of the dental5
hygiene profession with the opening of the first dental hygiene school by Dr. Alfred C.6
Fones in Bridgeport, Connecticut; and7
WHEREAS, a dental hygienist is a preventive oral health professional licensed in8
dental hygiene who provides educational, clinical, and therapeutic services supporting total9
oral health care through the promotion of optimal oral health; and10
WHEREAS, the education of a dental hygienist emphasizes all of the basic sciences11
and eligibility for licensure based upon successful completion of both a written national12
board dental hygiene examination and a clinical state board examination; and13
WHEREAS, dental hygienists are committed to maintaining the highest levels of14
quality and to keeping abreast of the most advanced technology in their field, as they15
advocate and attend continuing education courses in oral health care to maintain their16
licenses and to ensure that they provide state-of-the-art oral hygiene to their patients; and17
WHEREAS, a dental hygienist is a vital member of a complete dental team and is18
responsible for providing treatment that helps to prevent oral disease and for educating the19
patient to maintain optimal oral health in order to prevent oral diseases; and20 HLS 14RS-3946	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, for over ninety years, registered dental hygienists have provided quality1
preventive oral health care to millions of American adults and children; and2
WHEREAS, dental hygienists have also established a record of excellence in3
providing quality care for those patients with special needs; and4
WHEREAS, there are approximately one thousand six hundred licensed dental5
hygienists serving the oral health care needs of the people of the state of Louisiana alone;6
and7
WHEREAS, the month of October is designated as Dental Hygiene Month, focusing8
on the preventive benefits of good oral hygiene; and9
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association, along with other dental10
professions, celebrated Children's Dental Health Month in February, which focused on the11
needs of dental care for the children of the state of Louisiana; and12
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize dental hygienists and to encourage citizens13
to become familiar with and appreciative of the benefits of good dental hygiene.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the15
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 30, 2014, as Louisiana16
Dental Hygienists' Association Day at the state capitol, commend the Louisiana Dental17
Hygienists' Association and dental hygienists in Louisiana for their tireless efforts in18
promoting good dental health for the citizens of the state, and celebrate one hundred one19
years of the dental hygiene profession.20
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the21
Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association.22
