COMMENDATIONS: Commends the Strand Theatre of Shreveport Corporation and the
people of Shreveport on the celebration of the thirtieth season of the renovated
Strand Theatre as a performing arts venue
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the Strand Theatre of Shreveport Corporation and the people of Shreveport on2
the celebration of the thirtieth season of the renovated Strand Theatre as a3
performing arts venue.4
WHEREAS, the historic Strand Theatre opened to great fanfare in 1925 as a movie5
palace and Vaudeville house and prospered as such for decades; and6
WHEREAS, after a period of decline, architectural diminishment, and closure, the7
Strand Theatre was donated to the nonprofit Strand Theatre of Shreveport Corporation,8
which undertook extensive renovation of the facility, including replicating the original9
chandeliers, replacing the opera boxes, and restoring the original exterior facade, and after10
seven years completed the work of restoring the theatre to its original glory; and11
WHEREAS, in 1984, the Strand Theatre reopened as a performing arts venue with12
a concert by the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is now celebrating thirty years as a13
premier venue for concerts, plays, and Broadway shows; and14
WHEREAS, the Strand Theatre has become the anchor and centerpiece of the15
Shreveport arts district known as West Edge and has been recognized nationally by USA16
Weekend and by American Movie Classics Magazine as one of the top five glitziest theaters17

WHEREAS, on May 6, 2014, the thirtieth anniversary of the reopening of the Strand1
Theatre will be celebrated in grand style with a Birthday Celebration and Season2
Announcement Party to which the community is invited.3
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the4
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Strand Theatre of Shreveport5
Corporation and the people of Shreveport on the celebration of the thirtieth season of the6
renovated Strand Theatre as a performing arts venue and does hereby express its enduring7
appreciation to those who had the foresight to invest in saving this gem of a theatre and to8
those who continue to support it and its arts programs.9
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted10
to the chairman of the board of directors of the Strand Theatre.11
