HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 111
BY REPRESENTATIVE BURRELL
A RESOLUTION
To commend the Strand Theatre of Shreveport Corporation and the people of Shreveport on
the celebration of the thirtieth season of the renovated Strand Theatre as a
performing arts venue.
WHEREAS, the historic Strand Theatre opened to great fanfare in 1925 as a movie
palace and Vaudeville house and prospered as such for decades; and
WHEREAS, after a period of decline, architectural diminishment, and closure, the
Strand Theatre was donated to the nonprofit Strand Theatre of Shreveport Corporation,
which undertook extensive renovation of the facility, including replicating the original
chandeliers, replacing the opera boxes, and restoring the original exterior facade, and after
seven years completed the work of restoring the theatre to its original glory; and
WHEREAS, in 1984, the Strand Theatre reopened as a performing arts venue with
a concert by the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is now celebrating thirty years as a
premier venue for concerts, plays, and Broadway shows; and
WHEREAS, the Strand Theatre has become the anchor and centerpiece of the
Shreveport arts district known as West Edge and has been recognized nationally by 	USA
Weekend and by American Movie Classics Magazine as one of the top five glitziest theaters
for live performance anywhere in the country; and
WHEREAS, on May 6, 2014, the thirtieth anniversary of the reopening of the Strand
Theatre will be celebrated in grand style with a Birthday Celebration and Season
Announcement Party to which the community is invited. ENROLLEDHR NO. 111

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Strand Theatre of Shreveport
Corporation and the people of Shreveport on the celebration of the thirtieth season of the
renovated Strand Theatre as a performing arts venue and does hereby express its enduring
appreciation to those who had the foresight to invest in saving this gem of a theatre and to
those who continue to support it and its arts programs.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the chairman of the board of directors of the Strand Theatre.
