ENROLLED Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 12 BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW A RESOLUTION To honor the life, impact, and legacy of Trevor Sims, the eleven-year-old young man who helped raise thousands of dollars and donations for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank while fighting his own battle with cancer and to express condolences upon his passing; and WHEREAS, Trevor Sims was diagnosed with cancer at the age of five; after eleven months of chemotherapy and six months of radiation, his cancer was in remission, but it later reappeared; and WHEREAS, Trevor again achieved remission but when the cancer appeared a third time, he was diagnosed as terminal and passed away on the morning of Wednesday, October 16, 2013; and WHEREAS, upon his terminal diagnosis, he was asked about things he wanted to do before he died, and his response was that he wanted to feed the hungry; and WHEREAS, during his illness and battle with cancer, Trevor's loving and devoted mother, Allison, had to stop working to take care of him, so Trevor knew first hand what it felt like to not be able to afford food; and WHEREAS, in September 2013, Trevor spearheaded a citywide food drive that helped to fill the shelves of the local food bank; the event raised 34,798 pounds of food and $48,391 in monetary donations; and WHEREAS, the "Trevor's Wish" campaign, a collaboration between Trevor and his friends, Healing Place Church, and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, produced donations from out-of-state by sharing Trevor's story on social media; Select Media, a Pennsylvania chain of specialty hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, had sixteen events that raised donations for local food banks in twelve states; and ENROLLEDHR NO. 12 Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, the Central Community School System also raised $16,000 in donations for Trevor's cause; in total, the "Trevor's Wish" campaign was able to raise the equivalent of 350,953 meals; and WHEREAS, Trevor was featured on multiple local television programs for his efforts to help those in need, particularly those who hunger, all the while in the midst of his own struggle with a terminal diagnosis; and WHEREAS, on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, the Baton Rouge Metro Council voted to rename the North Boulevard Bridge the Trevor Sims Memorial Bridge in honor of Trevor; the bridge overlooks the St. Vincent de Paul dining facility for the homeless; and WHEREAS, Trevor's death has brought unimaginable pain to his friends and loved ones, who have found solace in their faith and religion; and WHEREAS, Trevor was one of a kind; a young man of grace, spirituality, poise, and compassion who will be remembered as a champion and advocate of the impoverished in his community; and WHEREAS, if life were measured by the number of other lives a person touches and not by the number of years he is alive, Trevor's number would be in the tens of thousands; he leaves a legacy that transcends his time and place in history and that will guide and inspire generations to come; and WHEREAS, the death of Trevor Sims has left an unspeakable emptiness in the hearts of his family members and friends, who have found comfort in the knowledge that he lived his life heroically and that his legacy will forever be an inspiration to others; and WHEREAS, Trevor continues to be mourned and sorely missed by those who had the honor of knowing him and who will always remember him as a selfless, courageous, young man and whose legacy will help feed the hungry in the Baton Rouge community for years to come; and WHEREAS, Trevor's life was a gift to the state of Louisiana, and his profound passion and purpose in life defined a movement to help give to those in need and continues to bring honor to himself, his legacy, his family, his friends, his state, and this nation. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend deepest sympathies to the members of the family of Trevor Sims and his fellow citizens; does hereby honor the lasting impact that his ENROLLEDHR NO. 12 Page 3 of 3 life has had in the Baton Rouge community; does hereby extend appreciation and admiration for his efforts to eradicate hunger among our most vulnerable citizens; does hereby record for posterity the tremendous accomplishments that Trevor's mission has made over the past year; does hereby acknowledge with immense gratitude the heroic deeds of this brave gentleman who was selfless through his final moments; does hereby express the deep regret of the entire state upon the loss of this extraordinary young man; and does hereby recognize the pride that he will forever bring to his family, his friends, his community, East Baton Rouge Parish, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.
