HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 211
BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Designates the gardens in front of the state capitol as the
"Memorial Garden"
A RESOLUTION1
To designate the gardens located in front of the state capitol as the "Memorial Garden" for2
the ceremony hosted by the Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana, Chapter One, to honor3
the many Louisianans who have died in the service of their country.4
WHEREAS, the Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana, Chapter One, was chartered in5
March of 2005, and the organization has grown from fifteen original members to over one6
hundred active members, and Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana, Chapter One, has helped to7
start several other chapters throughout the state; and8
WHEREAS, Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana is a service and support organization9
whose mission is to answer the call of military families in need and bring to the forefront the10
sacrifices of military personnel and their families, and the group hosts events that promote11
patriotism and honor our military and veterans; and12
WHEREAS, one of the newest activities instituted by the Blue Star Mothers of13
Louisiana, Chapter One, is a Memorial Day tribute to the many Louisianans who have paid14
the ultimate sacrifice in their service to the United States and to the state of Louisiana; and15
WHEREAS,  Memorial Day 2014, was the inauguration of that Memorial Day tribute16
which consisted of placing nearly ten thousand American flags in the gardens in the front17
of the Louisiana State Capitol to commemorate the lives of those valiant and selfless men18
and women who gave their lives so that we could live in freedom and peace; and19 HLS 14RS-6002	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, these intrepid men and women who died for our freedoms deserve1
respect and admiration for performing feats of great courage with incredible resolve and2
immeasurable bravery and for marching gallantly under the banner of freedom; and3
WHEREAS, the valiant actions of this nation's troops uphold the highest traditions4
of the United States Armed Forces, and they bring tremendous honor and pride to their5
families, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America; and6
WHEREAS, the freedom and security that citizens of the United States enjoy today7
are direct results of the blood shed and continued vigilance of the United States Armed8
Forces over the history of this great nation; and9
WHEREAS, the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of the family10
members who support them have preserved the liberties that have enriched this nation and11
made it unique in the world community; and12
WHEREAS, the citizens of Louisiana recognize that unselfishly protecting the13
United States during times of war and peace through service in the nation's armed services14
should be honored as the highest form of patriotism; and15
WHEREAS, the memorial ceremony conducted by the Blue Star Mothers of16
Louisiana, Chapter One, was held in the gardens in the front of the Louisiana State Capitol17
and included not only the ten thousand American flags, but also a reading of the list of18
names of those brave soldiers who have died to defend the country's freedom with a ship's19
bell rung for each name, and the service concluded with a 21-gun salute; and20
WHEREAS, because of the location of the memorial service and the intention of the21
Blue Star Mother's, Chapter One, to hold a similar ceremony each Memorial Day weekend22
in the future, it is only fitting and appropriate that the gardens in which the ceremony is held23
be designated as the "Memorial Garden".24
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the25
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby designate the gardens located in front of the state26
capitol as the "Memorial Garden" for the ceremony hosted by the Blue Star Mothers of27
Louisiana, Chapter One, to honor of the many Louisianans who have died in the service of28

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted1
to the Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana, Chapter One.2
