COMMENDATIONS: Commends Mount Carmel Academy upon winning the Class 5A
girls' basketball championship
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the Mount Carmel Academy girls' basketball team upon winning the 20142
Class 5A state basketball championship and to congratulate the Cubs on an3
outstanding 2013-2014 season.4
WHEREAS, the Mount Carmel Academy basketball team made school history by5
capturing the school's first basketball state title on March 8, 2014, after defeating Destrehan6
High School by nine points in a thrilling championship game that ended with a final score7
of 69-60; and8
WHEREAS, the Mount Carmel Academy basketball team not only made school9
history, but also state history by being the lowest-seeded team to win a girls' basketball state10
championship in any classification since the Louisiana High School Athletic Association11
made the switch from a power rankings format to seed teams in 2008; and12
WHEREAS, members of the Mount Carmel Academy basketball team shot thirty-13
nine percent from the field, thirty-nine percent from deep, and held Destrehan High School's14
basketball team to thirty-seven percent shooting; and15
WHEREAS, each young woman of the Mount Carmel basketball team deserves16
recognition for her vital contribution to the winning effort; and17
WHEREAS, Panos Bountovinas, coach of the Cubs, has instilled in the players the18
kind of leadership and motivational skills needed to achieve wins both on and off the court;19

WHEREAS, through their display of dedication and teamwork, the Mount Carmel1
Academy basketball team has brought a tremendous display of honor and pride to its school2
and local community.3
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the4
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the young women of the Mount Carmel5
Academy basketball team upon winning the 2014 Class 5A state basketball championship,6
does hereby express sincere congratulations to the Cubs in recognition of their first state7
championship basketball title, and does hereby extend to the team and coach best wishes for8
a successful future.9
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted10
to the Mount Carmel Academy basketball team.11
