SCHOOLS.  Provides relative to the size of secondary school classes. (8/1/14)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 17:174(A) and to enact R.S. 17:3996(B)(34), relative to schools2
and school children; to provide for class size for public and charter secondary school3
core curriculum classes; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 17:174(A) is hereby amended and reenacted and R.S. 17:3996(B)(34)6
is hereby enacted to read as follows:7
§174. Class size; maximum8
A.(1) Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, on and after September9
15, 1986, the number of students in any class in kindergarten through third grade in10
any public city or parish school system shall not exceed twenty, except physical11
education classes, unless otherwise specifically authorized in writing by the State12
Superintendent of Education based upon regulations adopted by the State Board of13
Elementary and Secondary Education. Such authorization shall be granted only on14
an individual basis with respect to each class.15
(2) Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, on or after August 1,16
2014, the number of students in any core curriculum class in a secondary school17 SB NO. 379

§3996. Charter schools; exemptions; requirements3

B. Notwithstanding any state law, rule, or regulation to the contrary and5
except as may be otherwise specifically provided for in an approved charter, a6
charter school established and operated in accordance with the provisions of this7
Chapter and its approved charter and the school's officers and employees shall be8
exempt from all statutory mandates or other statutory requirements that are9
applicable to public schools and to public school officers and employees except for10
the following laws otherwise applicable to public schools with the same grades:11

charter school shall not exceed 25.
