AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 33:383.3, relative to municipal governing authorities; to provide for limitation2
of terms of elected officials; to provide for an election; to provide for an effective3
date; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1.  R.S. 33:383.3 is hereby enacted to read as follows: 6
ยง383.3. Municipal governing authorities; limitation of terms of elected7
officials; referendum8
The governing authority of a municipality having a population between9
two thousand five hundred and five thousand within a parish having a10
population between two hundred thousand and two hundred fifty thousand,11
based on the latest federal decennial census, may enact an ordinance limiting12
the number of terms of office which any elected official of the municipality may13
serve to two consecutive terms in the same office. Any ordinance herein14
authorized shall become effective only after the question of such term limitation15
has been submitted to and approved by a majority of the qualified electors of16
the municipality who vote on the proposition at a regularly scheduled primary17
or general election held in accordance with the Louisiana Election Code.18
Section 2. This Act shall become effective upon signature by the governor or, if not19
signed by the governor, upon expiration of the time for bills to become law without signature20
by the governor, as provided by Article III, Section 18 of the Constitution of Louisiana. If21

vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become1
effective on the day following such approval.2
