SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 101
BY SENATOR BROWN 
LEGIS POWERS/FUNCTIONS.  Designates Monday, May 5, 2014, as "Alpha Phi Alpha
Day at the Louisiana Legislature" and commends Alpha Phi Alpha for one hundred eight
years of exemplary leadership.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To designate Monday, May 5, 2014, as "Alpha Phi Alpha Day in the Louisiana Legislature",2
commend Alpha Phi Alpha for one hundred eight years of exemplary leadership, and3
urge suitable observance of such day.4
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was founded on December 4, 1906,5
and celebrates one hundred eight years of existence, recalling its rich history and the6
important role it plays with distinction in the state of Louisiana and the United States of7
America; and8
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has supplied voice and vision to the9
struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world; and10
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter11
fraternity established for African Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca,12
New York by seven men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among13
African descendants in this country; and14
WHEREAS, the visionary founders, known as the "Jewels" of the fraternity, are15
Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley,16
Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy; and17
WHEREAS, the "Jewel" founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in18 SCR NO. 101

laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of manly deeds, scholarship, and1
love for all mankind; and2
WHEREAS, the mission of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is to develop leaders,3
promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for4
our communities; and5
WHEREAS, while Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., continues to stress academic6
excellence among its members, Alpha Phi Alpha also recognizes the need to help correct the7
educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African Americans; and8
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has long stood in the forefront of the9
African American community's fight for civil rights through leaders such as10
W. E. B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King Jr.,11
Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, T.J. Jemison,12
Ernest "Dutch" Morial, and many others; and13
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha spearheaded and oversaw the designing and building14
of a monument in Dr. King's honor, which is the newest memorial on the National Mall in15
Washington, D.C., the first to honor a non-president, and the first to honor a man of color;16
and17
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., engages in programs and activities to18
strengthen the community such as "A Voteless People is a Hopeless People" voter19
registration campaign, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts of America,"Go to High School,20
Go to College", and Project Alpha, a cooperative effort with the March of Dimes; and21
WHEREAS, this year, Alpha Phi Alpha members from across Louisiana will travel22
to Baton Rouge in order to celebrate the contributions and sacrifices in the legislature of23
fourteen past Alpha brothers and those currently serving: Senators Troy Brown and24
Elbert L. Guillory and Representatives Wesley T. Bishop, Roy A. Burrell, Herbert B. Dixon,25
Patrick O. Jefferson, and Vincent J. Pierre; and26
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., will forever hold high its lofty ideals27
and aims to be "First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All".28
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby29
designate Monday, May 5, 2014, as "Alpha Phi Alpha Day in the Louisiana Legislature".30 SCR NO. 101

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Alpha Phi Alpha is hereby commended for one1
hundred eight years of exemplary leadership, and observance of this day with appropriate2
recognition to the Louisiana District of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., in recognition3
of its contributions to the goals of the national organization.4
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to Alpha5
Phi Alpha's Louisiana District Director, Southwestern Regional Vice President, Executive6
Director, and General President and that a copy be filed at the General Headquarters of7
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in Baltimore, Maryland.8
