SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 109
BY SENATOR WALSWORTH 
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To designate April 12, 2014, as Oral Cancer Foundation Walk/Run for Awareness Day in
Louisiana.
WHEREAS, oral cancer develops within the head and neck region, specifically the
lips, mouth, and oropharynx, which is located at the rear of the mouth; and
WHEREAS, approximately 43,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer
annually; and
WHEREAS, 2013 was the fifth year that oral cancer occurrences increased
consecutively; and
WHEREAS, 115 people are diagnosed daily in the United States with oral cancer;
and
WHEREAS, the main causes of oral cancer are tobacco, alcohol, and the human
papilloma virus; and
WHEREAS, the Oral Cancer Foundation is a national public service, nonprofit entity
designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research,
advocacy, and patient support activities; and
WHEREAS, the Oral Cancer Foundation observes April as Oral, Head, and Neck
Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, on April 12, 2014, the Oral Cancer Foundation held a Walk/5k Run to
raise awareness of the prevalent form of cancer; and
WHEREAS, over one hundred and fifty participants attended the event; and
WHEREAS, numerous Baton Rouge based businesses donated items for the winners

WHEREAS, the funds raised will be used to further research and develop methods
to combat oral cancer within the state of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
designate April 12, 2014, as Oral Cancer Foundation Walk/Run for Awareness Day in
Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
Oral Cancer Foundation.
