SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 151
BY SENATORS LONG AND GALLOT AND REPRESENTATIVES BROWN AND COX
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend Beryl Shipley on being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame
Induction Class.
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the citizens and Legislature of Louisiana have
learned of the prestigious honor bestowed upon Beryl Shipley on his induction in the
Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, the inductees are chosen after extensive deliberations by an expert panel
of Louisiana Sports Writers' Association members from across the state who annually
consider more than one hundred twenty nominees for this honor; and
WHEREAS, Shipley guided the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), now
known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Ragin' Cajuns to national basketball
prominence; and
WHEREAS, he was the Ragin' Cajuns' coach from 1957 to 1973 and his teams had
a winning record of 293-126 (.699) and only one losing season in sixteen years; and
WHEREAS, USL finished in the national Top 20 in each of his last six seasons, the
first four in the college division polls, and the last two in Division I; and
WHEREAS, the Ragin' Cajuns went 19-5, 20-5, 16-10, 23-3, and 23-3 in his last five
seasons as head coach with stars like Hall of Fame members Bo Lamar, Roy Ebron, and
Marvin Winkler on his teams; and
WHEREAS, the final two teams were rated in the national Top 10 and reached the
NCAA Division I Tournament Sweet 16; and
WHEREAS, Coach Beryl Shipley was the Gulf States Conference Coach of the Year
four times and Coach of the Year in the Southland Conference once; and
WHEREAS, he was briefly the head coach of American Basketball Association's San
Diego Conquistadors; and 
WHEREAS, Beryl Shipley is also in the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame; and SCR NO. 151	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,
and the overall vitality of American society depends, in great measure, upon the dedication
of extraordinary men like Beryl Shipley who share their gifts and talents to coach and teach
others that through hard work and dedication, all dreams are possible.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend and congratulate Beryl Shipley on his impressive and successful basketball
coaching career and on being named as an inductee to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of
Fame.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Beryl Shipley.
