Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 155 BY SENATORS LONG AND GALLOT AND REPRESENTATIVES BROWN AND COX A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote posthumously on being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the people of Louisiana have learned of the prestigious honor bestowed upon the renowned football player and beloved coach Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote on his induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, the inductees are chosen after extensive deliberations by an expert panel of Louisiana Sports Writers' Association members from across the state who annually consider more than one hundred twenty nominees for this honor; and WHEREAS, Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote was born in Cottonport, Louisiana, on August 28, 1887, but later became a resident of Mobile, Alabama, and attended college at Auburn University, where he played on the football team from 1915 to 1917 as a fullback and a guard; and WHEREAS, after his successful college career, he had the opportunity to play professional football from 1918 to 1921 on several teams, including the Cleveland Naval Reserve football team, the Cleveland Tigers, the Mobile Bears, the Portsmouth Truckers, and the Charlotte Hornets; and WHEREAS, in addition to being a star player on the field, he also become a renowned coach and officiator, serving as an assistant football coach for Louisiana State University for two years and as head basketball coach for one season, as athletic director at Loyola University, as head football coach at Spring Hill College, and as an official in the Southern and Southeastern conferences, where he helped officiate the 1935 Rose Bowl as the field judge; and WHEREAS, his proud and distinguished career ended at Loyola University, where he was rehired as athletic director, a position he kept until his death on March 26, 1937; and SCR NO. 155 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote, an extraordinary team member and coach whose proud accomplishments will be remembered for many years, rightly deserves his place among our great sports legends as a member of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Richard Joseph "Moon" Ducote posthumously on being named to the 2014 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.
