SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 169
BY SENATOR CORTEZ
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend the St. Thomas More High School baseball team upon winning the Class 4A
state championship of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
WHEREAS, top-seeded St. Thomas More High School from Lafayette, with a season
record of thirty-one wins and only five defeats, beat Neville High School from Monroe to
claim its first Class 4A state baseball title in over two decades at the LHSAA/State Farm
Baseball Tournament played at McMurry Park in Sulphur, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the St. Thomas More (STM) Cougar baseball team earned its way to the
state tournament for the third consecutive year and this was the second straight year that the
team had played in the Class 4A championship game; and
WHEREAS, STM has had a very successful athletic program through the years, but
the last time the school won the state baseball title was in 1992, long before any of the
players on this year's team were born; and
WHEREAS, STM right fielder, Orynn Veillon hit a towering walk-off grand slam
in the bottom of the sixth inning to finish a 13-0 shelling of Neville and to earn the title for
the Cougars; and
WHEREAS, in the championship game, STM senior Wyatt Marks, who was named
the championship game's Outstanding Player, took the mound and pitched six shut-out
innings, scattering four hits and one walk, before the Cougars won in the sixth inning on the
ten-run rule; and
WHEREAS, the STM Cougars put up seven first inning runs with an RBI by
Chase Vallot, a three-run triple by Brandon Romero, and an RBI-single by Brennan Breaux,
which ended the scoring in the opening frame; and
WHEREAS, the Cougars scored again in the third inning, adding two runs from
Vallot and designated hitter Mason Temple, leaving the score with a nine-run STM lead, and
setting the stage for Veillon's dramatic finish; and SCR NO. 169	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, the STM team included seven seniors and Coach Gary Perkins gave
much of the credit to the six starters returning from last year, stating that he didn't believe
that the players who had been to the championship game two previous years were willing
to leave without a title this year.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend the St. Thomas More High School baseball team upon winning the Class 4A state
championship.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Coach Gary Perkins in care of St. Thomas More High School in Lafayette, Louisiana.
