SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 37
BY SENATORS GARY SMITH AND BROWN AND REPRESENTATI VES GAINES,
MILLER AND WILLMOTT 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends La'Keisha McKinney on being selected the 2014 Teacher
of the Year.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend La'Keisha McKinney on being selected the 2014 Teacher of the Year.2
WHEREAS, educators are one of our state's greatest resources because our children3
would not learn without their tireless hard work and dedication; and4
WHEREAS, Ms. McKinney has proven that she has superb skills for teaching and5
reaching the students that she has been entrusted with over the years; and6
WHEREAS, during her last four years in the classroom she served as a reading and7
math teacher for gifted students grades three through six at R.J. Vial Elementary School in8
Paradis, Louisiana; and9
WHEREAS, Ms. McKinney currently serves as the assistant principal at New Sarpy10
Elementary School in Destrehan, Louisiana; and11
WHEREAS, she was named the school teacher of the year at R.J. Vial Elementary12
School, the district's teacher of the year, and now the state's teacher of the year; and13
WHEREAS, Ms. McKinney has sixteen years of experience in the classrooms of St.14
Charles Parish and is a National Board Certified teacher; and15
WHEREAS, she was awarded Teacher of the Year at Mimosa Park Elementary16
School in 2007; and17
WHEREAS, Ms. McKinney received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education18 SCR NO. 37

and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, and Instruction in Early Childhood1
Education from the University of New Orleans; and2
WHEREAS, as a National Board Certified Teacher she is a member of the School3
Improvement Team, the College and Career Readiness Taskforce, the Louisiana Reading4
Association, and the St. Charles Parish Reading Council and serves as a district mentor; and5
WHEREAS, the 2014 Louisiana Teacher of the Year program represents Louisiana's6
commitment to effective instructional and leadership practices that lead to student success7
in college and career; and8
WHEREAS, this emphasis on educators and the integral role they play is a key aspect9
of Louisiana Believes, which is the state's plan that focuses on empowering and celebrating10
educators across Louisiana who are making a very real impact in the lives of children.11
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby12
commend La'Keisha McKinney on being selected the 2014 Teacher of the Year and for the13
difference that she makes in the lives of children and the impact that her teachings have on14
students' future college and career success.15
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Ms.16
La'Keisha McKinney, the 2014 Teacher of the Year.17
