SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 53

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To urge and request the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners to place on its official
website a link to information regarding end of life care in the state of Louisiana.
WHEREAS, in 2012 an estimated one million five hundred thousand to one million
six hundred thousand patients received services from hospice; and
WHEREAS, over the past decade, the hospice industry has been marked by
substantial growth in the number of hospice programs and patients served; and
WHEREAS, as the average life span in the United States has increased so has the
number of individuals who die of chronic progressive diseases that require longer term and
more sustained care; and
WHEREAS, according to 2012 Medicare information, nearly half of all dying
Louisianians received hospice care; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Natural Death Act and the LaPOST statute contains
language providing nothing shall be construed to condone, authorize, or approve mercy
killing or euthanasia or to permit any affirmative or deliberate act or mission to end life other
than to permit the natural process of dying.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
urge and request the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners to place on its official
website a link to information regarding end of life care in the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
executive director of the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
