WHEREAS, the supplemental nutrition program in Louisiana is important to many households because these benefits allow low-income households to purchase the food that is necessary for good health; and WHEREAS, in order to be eligible for nutrition assistance, a family in Louisiana must meet standards relative to their present resources, including such assets as a bank account balance and their current income; and WHEREAS, DCFS reports that currently over three hundred seventy thousand cases, both families and individuals, receive benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in Louisiana; and WHEREAS, while DCFS has been recognized nationally for its accuracy in the food stamps program as recently as 2008, issues remain particularly with respect to removing deceased recipients from the list of eligible recipients. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request that the Department of Health and Hospitals and the Department of Children and Family Services coordinate efforts to improve the accuracy of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, particularly with respect to having the names of deceased recipients expeditiously removed from the list of eligible recipients. SCR NO. 57 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals and the secretary of the Department of Children and Family Services.
