Commends LSU Women's Gymnastics Head Coach D-D Breaux on being named National Coach of the Year for 2014. A RESOLUTION1 To commend and congratulate Head Coach D-D Breaux of the LSU Women's Gymnastics2 team on a school record season and upon receipt of the title of National Coach of the3 Year for 2014 awarded by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics4 Coaches/Women's Division I.5 WHEREAS, D-D Breaux is to be congratulated for her newest national coaching title6 and for the impressive assemblage of coaching accomplishments that she has accrued during7 her thirty-seven seasons at Louisiana State University that include honors as National8 Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Central Region Coach of the Year six times, as9 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year six times, as a finalist for NCAA Coach of the10 Year, and with election to the USA Gymnastics Region 8 Hall of Fame; and11 WHEREAS, known as the "Dean of Coaches" at the LSU Athletic Department, she12 is one of its longest serving faculty members who has provided extraordinary leadership and13 drive to the Lady Tigers since 1978; and14 WHEREAS, D-D Breaux maintains a level of consistency that has propelled LSU15 into the limelight as a nationally recognized and highly successful program; under her16 tutelage, Lady Tigers Gymnastics have enjoyed a top ten ranking for twenty-four seasons;17 and18 SR NO. 103 SLS 14RS-2840 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, D-D has been the catalyst behind the sustained success of women's1 gymnastics with a regular season record of 433-244-6 and 191-151-2 in post season2 performances; and3 WHEREAS, D-D Breaux is a champion recruiter of both stellar gymnastic athletes4 and extremely qualified coaching staff; and5 WHEREAS, whether at daily practice or sizing up the competition at an NCAA6 Super Six meet, D-D is a leader of the highest caliber who infuses her team with the mantra,7 "stay in the process", to remain focused on the task at hand with no second-guessing and no8 regrets; and9 WHEREAS, D-D prepares these exceptional young women for "Life in the Real10 World" with equal attention paid to athletics, academics, and community service; her11 formula has produced a plethora of well rounded student-athletes that hold nine individual12 national titles and include two hundred fifty All-Americans and Scholastic All-Americans;13 and14 WHEREAS, in 2013, the ladies gymnastic team won the meritorious LSU Tiger Cup,15 an annual award earned by the athletic program that best represents the university in16 accumulation of community service hours, grade point average, and national placement17 ranking in post season competition; and18 WHEREAS, D-D sets an excellent example in that she donates time and effort to19 many worthy community service causes that include the YWCA's Pink Ribbon Campaign20 for Breast Cancer, Foundation 56, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, St. Jude's Hospital,21 the Alzheimer's Association, and as the LSU chair for the United Way campaign, and in22 2009, she was the recipient of the Community Service Award from the McMain's Children's23 Development Center; and24 WHEREAS, born in Donaldsonville, her natural athleticism was apparent at an early25 age and as a teenager she was nationally ranked by both the Amateur Athletic Union and the26 United States Gymnastics Federation; D-D competed as a Junior Olympic National27 Champion, a participant on the World Games, and, while attending Southeastern Louisiana28 University, she competed on the Lady Lions gymnastics team for two seasons celebrating29 a second-place finish at the 1972 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women30 SR NO. 103 SLS 14RS-2840 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 Championship, and also served as an assistant coach for the SLU Lady Lions, as a national1 level gymnastics judge, and as the first state director for the Louisiana USA gymnastics2 program; and3 WHEREAS, in 1976, she matriculated to LSU and earned both her bachelor's degree4 and master's degree and became head coach in 1978 when LSU finished first in regional5 competition and ninth nationally, and the rest is a very colorful and successful history of6 extraordinary gymnastic glories capped by a fourth place national finish in the NCAA in7 1988 and, in 2014, a school record-setting score of 197.600 and a third place ranking at the8 NCAA Super Six Finals; and9 WHEREAS, D-D Breaux merits the highest commendation for her hard work,10 dedication, and record-setting achievements that she brings to the state of Louisiana.11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana12 does hereby congratulate D-D Breaux, head coach of the LSU Tiger Women's Gymnastics13 team, on a record season and upon receipt of the title, National Coach of the Year for 2014.14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does15 hereby extend best wishes to Head Coach D-D Breaux and the LSU gymnastics program as16 they prepare for continued success in the future.17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to LSU18 Women's Gymnastics Head Coach D-D Breaux and to LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva.19 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Suzi Montague.
