CONDOLENCES. Expresses condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
upon the death of Dr. Karenlyn Raelette Smith "Kay" Dawson, MD.
A RESOLUTION1
To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the2
passing of Dr. Karenlyn Raelette Smith "Kay" Dawson, MD.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the citizens of Louisiana4
and the members of the Senate have learned of the passing of Dr. Karenlyn Raelette Smith5
"Kay" Dawson, on May 15, 2014, at age forty-eight; and6
WHEREAS, she was born on October 25, 1966, to Reverend James Smith and Wray7
Webb Smith and was a lifelong member of Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in8
Scotlandville, Louisiana; and9
WHEREAS, Dr. Kay Dawson was a Southern University Laboratory Kitten10
graduating in 1984, earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Southern University11
Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1988, and received a Master of Science degree from12
Michigan State University in 1994 in Crop & Soil Sciences/Environmental Toxicology; and13
WHEREAS, in 1999, she successfully earned her doctorate degree in medicine from14
Wayne State University School of Medicine; and15
WHEREAS, Dr. Dawson was an emergency physician at C&M Medical Services and16
also served as a physician consultant and medical director; and17
WHEREAS, she pledged Beta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,18 SR NO. 186

Incorporated; and1
WHEREAS, Dr. Kay Dawson was preceded in death by her father,2
Reverend James Smith, and is survived by her husband Anthony C. Dawson Sr.; one3
daughter, Anniston G. Dawson; her mother, Wray Webb Smith; and a host of family and4
friends; and5
WHEREAS, with the death of Dr. Kay Dawson, Louisiana has lost one of her finest6
citizens, and although her death has left a tremendous void in her community, her memory7
shall remain eternal in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved her.8
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana9
does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of10
Dr. Karenlyn Raelette Smith "Kay" Dawson, does hereby record for posterity her11
outstanding accomplishments as a doctor and her singular contributions to the field of12
medicine, does hereby recognize the deep sense of pride and honor that this fine woman will13
forever bring to her family, friends, and colleagues, and does hereby extend enduring14
appreciation for the wonderful way in which she touched the lives of countless people in the15
state of Louisiana.16
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the17
family of Dr. Kay Dawson.18
