Commends the Southern University Law Center as an institution that promotes and perpetuates the advancement of all citizens of the state and designates April 2, 2014, as "SULC Day at the Capitol". A RESOLUTION1 To commend and congratulate the Southern University Law Center as it assembles the law2 center family for "SULC Day at the Capitol" and further recognize the center as an3 institution that promotes and perpetuates the advancement of all citizens of the state4 and to designate Wednesday, April 2, 2014, as "SULC Day at the Capitol".5 WHEREAS, plans for the law school at Southern University A&M College were6 approved by the State Board of Education at its meeting on January 10, 1947, and in June7 1947 $40,000 was appropriated for the operation of the school; and8 WHEREAS, the Southern University Law School was officially opened in September9 1947 to provide legal education for African-American students; and10 WHEREAS, after thirty-eight years of operation as a School of Law, the Southern11 University Board of Supervisors re-designated the Southern University School of Law as12 the Southern University Law Center (SULC), effective July 1, 1985; and13 WHEREAS, the SULC is dedicated to offering students from diverse backgrounds14 a quality legal education in civil and common law that will prepare them to be highly15 effective, competent, and ethical professionals who possess a deep sense of community; and16 WHEREAS, the law center is fully accredited by the American Bar Association, the17 Supreme Court of Louisiana, and the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association18 SR NO. 34 SLS 14RS-1668 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 of Colleges and Secondary Schools; and1 WHEREAS, the SULC is a full member of the American Association of Law2 Schools and additionally, is approved by the Veterans Administration for the training of3 eligible veterans; and4 WHEREAS, the SULC celebrates its sixty-sixth year this 2013-2014 academic5 year; and6 WHEREAS, more than 3,500 graduates who are practicing or retired among the7 bench and bar, locally, nationally, and internationally are counted as SULC graduates; and8 WHEREAS, many have gathered at the state's capitol for SULC Day, including9 alumni who have played significant roles as Louisiana legislators, with four SULC graduates10 currently serving in the Louisiana Senate and seven in the Louisiana House of11 Representatives.12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana13 does hereby commend and congratulate Southern University Law Center (SULC) on its14 convening of alumni and friends for the SULC Day and as an organization that promotes and15 perpetuates the advancement of all citizens of the great state of Louisiana.16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Wednesday, April 2, 2014, is hereby designated17 as "SULC Day at the Capitol". 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the19 Southern University Law Center.20 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Jerry J.
