Walker Career College and Preparatory High School cheerleading squad for taking first place in the WSA Grand Nationals cheerleading competition. A RESOLUTION1 To commend the cheerleading squad of L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker College and Career2 Preparatory High School on taking first place at the Worldwide Spirit Association3 Grand Nationals cheerleading competition recently held in New Orleans.4 WHEREAS, in August 2013 two high schools, L.B. Landry and O. Perry Walker,5 combined to in a state-of-the-art facility in Algiers to form L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker6 College and Career Preparatory High School, now Landry-Walker High School; and7 WHEREAS, the move to consolidation, despite the concerns and controversy among8 residents of Algiers, produced new consolidated teams for all sports, the band, cheerleaders,9 and the student body as a whole; and10 WHEREAS, having only been performing together for the current school year, since11 the consolidation of their school, the varsity cheer squad took first in the advanced category12 at the WSA cheerleading competition in New Orleans this spring; and13 WHEREAS, the cheerleading squad states in its mission statement that they stand14 in support of their teammates and their coaches and hold each other to the standard of15 supporting the school athletic teams, representing their school in a positive light at all times,16 and always representing themselves as winners; and17 WHEREAS, head coach of the cheerleaders, Glenn Caston and his staff came from18 SR NO. 47 SLS 14RS-1966 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 Walker and were pleasantly surprised by the talent of the combined squad; and1 WHEREAS, the team practices six days a week, and on school days the students2 attend study hall for an hour an a half, followed by between two and a half and three hours3 of practice; and4 WHEREAS, cheer practice goes beyond merely cheer moves and technique, but5 includes, etiquette, character-building, and other life skills; and6 WHEREAS, many of the girls consider time management an essential skill in order7 to juggle a demanding practice schedule, performances, and maintaining good grades; and8 WHEREAS, the squad cheers at all football, volleyball, and basketball games, and9 at parades and competitions; and10 WHEREAS, Coach Caston states that while he is proud of his team, perhaps more11 importantly, the Algiers community has taken pride in the team's success at the recent12 national competition; and13 WHEREAS, having taken first place in the WSA championship, Caston believes that14 the team can continue to improve its skills and performance, setting their goal to perform15 well at the next competition in Pensacola, Florida on April 12; and16 WHEREAS, in competition, the team focuses on performing at its best and making17 their team the best that it can be, not being concerned with the performance of any of the18 other teams involved in the competition.19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana20 does hereby commend the cheerleading squad of L.B. Landry-O.
