Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 47 BY SENATORS HEITMEIER, MORRELL, MURRAY AND PETERSON A RESOLUTION To commend the cheerleading squad of L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker College and Career Preparatory High School on taking first place at the Worldwide Spirit Association Grand Nationals cheerleading competition recently held in New Orleans. WHEREAS, in August 2013 two high schools, L.B. Landry and O. Perry Walker, combined in a state-of-the-art facility in Algiers to form L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker College and Career Preparatory High School, now Landry-Walker High School; and WHEREAS, the move to consolidation, despite the concerns and controversy among residents of Algiers, produced new consolidated teams for all sports, the band, cheerleaders, and the student body as a whole; and WHEREAS, having only been performing together for the current school year, since the consolidation of their school, the varsity cheer squad took first in the advanced category at the WSA cheerleading competition in New Orleans this spring; and WHEREAS, the cheerleading squad states in its mission statement that they stand in support of their teammates and their coaches and hold each other to the standard of supporting the school athletic teams, representing their school in a positive light at all times, and always representing themselves as winners; and WHEREAS, head coach of the cheerleaders, Glenn Caston and his staff came from Walker and were pleasantly surprised by the talent of the combined squad; and WHEREAS, the team practices six days a week, and on school days the students attend study hall for an hour and a half, followed by between two and a half and three hours of practice; and WHEREAS, cheer practice goes beyond merely cheer moves and technique, but includes etiquette, character-building, and other life skills; and WHEREAS, many of the girls consider time management an essential skill in order to juggle a demanding practice schedule, performances, and maintaining good grades; and SR NO. 47 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the squad cheers at all football, volleyball, and basketball games, and at parades and competitions; and WHEREAS, Coach Caston states that while he is proud of his team, perhaps more importantly, the Algiers community has taken pride in the team's success at the recent national competition; and WHEREAS, having taken first place in the WSA championship, Caston believes that the team can continue to improve its skills and performance, setting their goal to perform well at the next competition in Pensacola, Florida, on April 12; and WHEREAS, in competition, the team focuses on performing at its best and making their team the best that it can be, not being concerned with the performance of any of the other teams involved in the competition. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the cheerleading squad of L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker College and Career Preparatory High School on taking first place at the Worldwide Spirit Association Grand Nationals cheerleading competition recently held in New Orleans. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Coach Glenn Caston, coach of the Landry-Walker High School cheerleading squad. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
