Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 67 BY SENATOR WALSWORTH A RESOLUTION To recognize the week of April 22nd through the 29th, 2014, as The World Primary Immunodeficiency Week. WHEREAS, primary immunodeficiency diseases are disorders in which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not function properly; and WHEREAS, these disorders are caused by intrinsic or genetic defects in the immune system, many of which require chronic replacement therapy consisting of immune globulin administration, gamma interferon, antibiotic therapy, bone marrow or stem cell transplantation, or gene therapy to protect individuals from frequent life-threatening infections and debilitating illnesses; and WHEREAS, there can sometimes be a delay of more than twelve years from the onset of symptoms to diagnosis, resulting in permanent functional impairments; and WHEREAS, the World Health Organization recognizes more than 150 primary immunodeficiency diseases; and WHEREAS, there may be as many as 250,000 people living in the United States today with diagnosed primary immunodeficiency diseases and many require specialized health care and treatment; and WHEREAS, primary immunodeficiency awareness week is an opportunity to increase awareness of these disorders and to educate the public on the diagnosis, treatment, and challenges faced by those who suffer from the disorder and shared by their families; and WHEREAS, widespread public support is needed to understand primary immune deficiency diseases, find cures, and provide access to all available life-saving therapies; and WHEREAS, the Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiency in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Louisiana Primary Immunodeficiency Network (LAPIN) deserve special recognition for their initiatives to improve the recognition, diagnosis, treatment, and quality of lives of people with primary immunodeficiency diseases. SR NO. 67 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the week of April 22nd through 29th, 2014, as The World Primary Immunodeficiency Week. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the Jeffrey Modell Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies and the Louisiana Primary Immunodeficiency Network at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
