HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 42
BY REPRESENTATIVE SMITH AND SENATORS DORSEY-COLOMB AND BROOME
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To commend Chicken Shack management and personnel upon the celebration of eighty
years of continuous operation.
WHEREAS, the original Chicken Shack was founded in 1935 in the front of the
home of its owner, Thomas H. Delpit, and the back of the small shotgun house was the
family's living quarters; and
WHEREAS, current Chicken Shack owner, Joseph Delpit, was born in the family
living portion of the building but likes to joke that he was born on Chicken Shack's kitchen
floor; and
WHEREAS, Chicken Shack holds the distinction of being the oldest continually
operating restaurant in Baton Rouge and has provided sustenance to such notable celebrities
as James Brown, Sam Cooke, Ike and Tina Turner, Buddy Guy, and Percy Sledge; and
WHEREAS, in 1953, Chicken Shack played a role in the civil rights movement by
serving as a meeting place for the organizers of the Baton Rouge bus boycott; in addition,
Martin Luther King, III, a Mississippi Indian chief, and an African king have patronized the
establishment, and it is appropriate to recognize the business and civic contributions made
to the Baton Rouge Community in the eighty years of business of Chicken Shack.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend the management team of Chicken Shack for perpetuating the historical icon across
eighty years of continuous operation and does hereby extend best wishes for continued
success and prosperity in the years to come.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Joseph Delpit.
