HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 188

A RESOLUTION
To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the death of Jay Rink,
former football standout at Brother Martin High School and Tulane University.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Louisiana House of
Representatives has learned of the death of Jay Rink on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at the age
of forty-seven, after a courageous five-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS);
and
WHEREAS, in 1986, Mr. Rink graduated from Brother Martin High School, where
he was an outstanding member of the football team; and
WHEREAS, following his senior season of high school football, Mr. Rink joined the
Brother Martin High School wrestling team and won a state championship in the
heavyweight division; and
WHEREAS, in February of 1986, Mr. Rink signed with Tulane University; as a
member of the Green Wave football team, he set a school record with seven career fumble
recoveries, a record which still remains today; and
WHEREAS, during his junior and senior year at Tulane University, Mr. Rink led the
Green Wave in sacks; his thirteen career sacks remains in the top ten of Tulane history; and
WHEREAS, in June of 2010, Mr. Rink was diagnosed with ALS; in an effort to help
offset medical expenses and to give back to those who fight against ALS, Mr. Rink's family
and co-workers formed "Jay's Defensive Line" and hosted a festival each spring in honor of
Mr. Rink; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rink remained active with Brother Martin High School after his
diagnosis with ALS; he would frequently attend sporting events to show his support and
pride for the Crusaders; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Rink is survived by his loving wife, Michelle; eight children; his
sisters, Lynn Crozier and her husband Rick, and Shannon Bell and her husband Chris; his
parents, Joe and Patsy Rink; many nieces and nephews; and numerous devoted friends; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Rink will forever be remembered for his extraordinary athletic
ability and his uplifting spirit; and
WHEREAS, the death of Jay Rink has left a tremendous void in his community and
has created a genuine sense of sorrow in the many individuals who knew and loved this
extraordinary man.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the
death of Jay Rink, former football standout at Brother Martin High School and Tulane
University; does hereby record for posterity his profound talent and outstanding abilities;
does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the pride and honor that this extraordinary man
will forever bring to his family, friends, community, and the state of Louisiana; and does
hereby extend deepest regret upon the loss of this most cherished gentleman whose legacy
shall forever remain a source of tremendous pride, joy, and honor in the minds and hearts
of all who knew and loved him.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of Jay Rink.
