ENROLLED 2015 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 192 BY REPRESENTATIVE THIERRY A RESOLUTION To commend Bishop Curtis John Guillory. WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Bishop Curtis John Guillory for his hard work and dedication to his church community and upon the occasion of St. Ann Catholic Church's new C.C.D. center being named after him; and WHEREAS, born on September 1, 1943, in Mallet, Louisiana, Bishop Guillory is the oldest of sixteen children of the late Wilfred and Theresa Guillory; and WHEREAS, at an early age, he learned the importance of hard work and discipline; after the passing of his parents, Bishop Guillory took on the responsibility of being the head of his family; he is an exemplary brother and an understanding friend; and WHEREAS, in 1960, he entered the seminary at Society of the Divine Word in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; upon completion of his studies at Society of the Divine Word, he furthered his studies at Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa, before receiving a masters of divinity at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Illinois; he also received a masters of Christian spirituality from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska; and WHEREAS, on December 16, 1972, Bishop Guillory was ordained to the priesthood at St. Ann Catholic Church in Mallet; on February 19, 1988, he was ordained as Auxiliary Bishop in Houston, Texas, for the Diocese of Galveston-Houston; on July 28, 2000, Bishop Guillory was installed as the Bishop of Beaumont; and WHEREAS, over the years, his assignments have included serving as the director of college seminary formation for the Society of the Divine Word in New Orleans, Louisiana, and pastor at St. Augustine Church in New Orleans for six years; and WHEREAS, Bishop Guillory's numerous religious and civic involvements have included serving as chaplain for the New Orleans Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, chaplain and member of the Knights of Peter Claver, Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 192 ENROLLED member of the Black Caucus, and board member for the Louisiana ONE CHURCH/ONE FAMILY Adoption program; and WHEREAS, currently, Bishop Guillory serves on the Board of Trustees for Xavier University of Louisiana, on the board for Inspire - Encourage - Achieve (IEA), and he is a committee member for the Catholic Church Extension Society, the USCCB Home Missions, and the USCCB African American Catholics; he also serves as an advisory committee member for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers and is on the advisory boards of the Children's Defense Fund and the Julie Rogers "Gift of Life" Program; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the church and his strong belief that education is an important aspect of everyone's life, St. Ann Catholic Church will name its new C.C.D. center the "Bishop Curtis J. Guillory Learning Center"; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize Bishop Guillory's honorable leadership and inspiration, and to commend him for his many years of dedicated service to the church and community. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Bishop Curtis John Guillory; does hereby recognize his noble achievements and contributions to his church and community; and does hereby wish him full measures of success and happiness in the future.
