HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 221
BY REPRESENTATIVE FOIL
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Linda Seale Chauviere upon her retirement as head of
school at St. James Episcopal Day School after 46 years of educating Louisiana
students
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend Linda Seale Chauviere on the occasion of her retirement as head of school at
3 St. James Episcopal Day School after forty-six years of dedication to the education
4 of young people in Louisiana.
5 WHEREAS, Linda Seale Chauviere was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Virgil
6and Ruth Seale; and
7 WHEREAS, she graduated from Glen Oaks High School in 1965, and earned a
8bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Louisiana State University in 1969;
9and
10 WHEREAS, while attending LSU, she met Arnold Chauviere, and the couple
11married shortly after her graduation; and
12 WHEREAS, while teaching full-time in the East Baton Rouge school system from
131969 until 1991, Ms. Chauviere earned her masters of education in administration and
14supervision from LSU, as well as numerous other education certificates, distinctions, and
15honors; and
16 WHEREAS, she was selected as the East Baton Rouge Teacher of the Year in 1979;
17and
18 WHEREAS, in 1991, she became a LEAP specialist for the East Baton Rouge school
19system, and she served in that capacity with distinction for six years; and

1 WHEREAS, in 1997, Ms. Chauviere became a school administrator, serving as the
2principal at Prescott Middle School, assistant principal of instruction at Scotlandville Middle
3Magnet School, and principal at Magnolia Woods Elementary School; and
4 WHEREAS, in 2001, she left the East Baton Rouge school system to serve the state
5as director of the Distinguished Educator Program at the Department of Education; and
6 WHEREAS, shortly after retiring from the Department of Education, Ms. Chauviere
7was called to serve as head of school for St. James Episcopal Day School in downtown
8Baton Rouge; and
9 WHEREAS, during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Ms. Chauviere made sure
10that displaced families had a place to send their young children to school by opening
11enrollment at St. James and hiring additional teachers who were also displaced because of
12the hurricane; and
13 WHEREAS, in 2009, under her leadership, St. James became the only private
14elementary school in Louisiana to be named a Blue Ribbon School by the United States
15Department of Education; and
16 WHEREAS, with all of her professional accomplishments, she is most proud of her
17family, her husband Arnold and son Kurt; and
18 WHEREAS, as a testament to her dedication to education and teaching abilities, her
19son Kurt graduated as valedictorian from Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge, graduated
20magna cum laude in history from Harvard, and earned a law degree from Harvard as a
21magna cum laude graduate; and
22 WHEREAS, Ms. Chauviere will retire from St. James Episcopal Day School in July
23after forty-six years of distinguished service in the field of education.
24 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
25Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Linda Seale Chauviere upon her retirement
26as head of school at St. James Episcopal Day School and commends her for forty-six years
27of dedication to the education of young people in Louisiana.
28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
29to Linda Seale Chauviere.
