HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 26

A RESOLUTION
To commend Louisiana Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate
Programs (GEAR UP) and to designate Monday, May 11, 2015, as Louisiana GEAR
UP Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP delivers support to low income, minority, and
disadvantaged students from underserved communities who may be the first in their families
to attend college; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP is sustained by public and private partnerships,
enlisting the powerful resources of government, business, and community to support
students as they prepare to enter and succeed in college; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP is administered by the Louisiana Office of Student
Financial Assistance and has supported over twenty thousand Louisiana students in over
sixty schools located in seventeen parishes throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana GEAR UP offers students college and career readiness
interventions such as tutoring, mentoring, financial literacy, college scholarships, campus
trips, and peer leadership clubs; Louisiana GEAR UP currently serves three thousand high
school seniors in thirty schools and twelve parishes; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize Monday, May 11, 2015, as Louisiana
GEAR UP Day at the state capitol and to welcome the outstanding student leaders from
Louisiana GEAR UP as they share how this exceptional program has impacted them and
over twenty thousand low income students within the past twelve years.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the exceptional efforts of Louisiana Gaining
Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) as the program

delivers support to thousands of students and does hereby designate Monday, May 11, 2015,
as Louisiana GEAR UP Day at the state capitol.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the program coordinator of Louisiana GEAR UP.
