ENROLLED 2015 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 60 BY REPRESENTATIVE JEFFERSON A RESOLUTION To commend native Louisianian and "folk-funk" musical artist, Bobby Rush. WHEREAS, born Emmit Ellis, Jr., in Louisiana on November 10, 1940, he and his family moved to Chicago in 1953, where Rush developed his own individual sound, a style that brings together the musical genres of blues, soul, and funk that he dubbed "folk-funk"; and WHEREAS, prolific in the era of LPs, Rush released several long-play albums, including "Rush Hour" in 1979, "Gotta Have Money" in 1984, "What's Good for the Goose Is Good for the Gander" in 1985, "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" in 1995, "Lovin' a Big Fat Woman" in 1997, and "Hoochie Man" in 2000, for which he received a Grammy Award nomination; and WHEREAS, Bobby Rush was injured in 2001 when his tour bus crashed; after hospitalization and recuperation, he returned to action in 2003 with the release of "Live from Ground Zero" on his own label, Deep Rush, and continued his prolific production and recording; in 2008, he released "Look at What You Gettin", a musical mix of ballads, soul, and bluesy double entendres; and WHEREAS, in 2013, Bobby Rush joined the prestigious membership of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, and his recording "Down in Louisiana" won Soul Blues Album of the Year at the 2014 Blues Music Awards; he also won B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year, and his song "Decisions" won Best Soul Blues; and WHEREAS, septuagenarian Bobby Rush continues to garner the attention of the music industry; he received a second Grammy Award nomination in 2014 for Best Blues Album for "Decisions", a collaboration with the band Blinddog Smokin' and six-time Page 1 of 2 HR NO. 60 ENROLLED Grammy Award winner Dr. John, another native Louisiana musician, and it is fitting to herald the many musical accomplishments of Bobby Rush. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Bobby Rush for his unique contributions to the art of music and does hereby extend best wishes for continued health, happiness, and success.
