HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 61
BY REPRESENTATIVE JEFFERSON
A RESOLUTION
To express the condolences of the Louisiana House of Representatives upon the death of
William Thomas Bailey of Athens, Louisiana.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Louisiana House of
Representatives has learned of the death of William Thomas Bailey on October 20, 2014,
at the age of eighty-one; and
WHEREAS, he was a lifelong resident of Claiborne Parish; he graduated from
Athens High School and Louisiana Tech University; while at Louisiana Tech, Mr. Bailey
was a member of the basketball team and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bailey obtained a masters degree in mathematics and administration
at Mississippi State University; and
WHEREAS, he began his teaching and coaching career at Summerfield High School;
he eventually became the principal at Summerfield High School and guided the community
to excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and athletics; and
WHEREAS, in the late 1960s, Mr. Bailey led Summerfield through the desegregation
process; and
WHEREAS, he served as the superintendent of schools in Claiborne Parish, and upon
his retirement as superintendent, he returned to his position as principal of Summerfield
High School and later served as the assistant principal for Athens High School and director
of Louisiana Technical College Vocational School in Homer; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bailey was also an active member in his community; he served as
a director at Homer National Bank, a board member of Presbyterian Village of Homer, a
board member of the Coordinating and Development Council of North Louisiana, and he

was a member of Athens Presbyterian Church, the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association, and
the Retired Principals and Superintendents Associations of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bailey had a passion for the outdoors, and he enjoyed hunting and
fishing with his friends and family; and
WHEREAS, with the death of William Thomas Bailey, Louisiana has lost one of her
finest citizens, and his memory shall forever remain in the minds and hearts of all who knew
and loved this extraordinary man.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express its sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the
death of William Thomas Bailey and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the pride
and honor he will forever bring to his family, friends, community, and the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of William Thomas Bailey.
