HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 77
BY REPRESENTATIVE HONORE
A RESOLUTION
To commend the boys' basketball team of Southern University Laboratory School upon
winning the 2015 Louisiana Youth Sports Multi-State Basketball Championship.
WHEREAS, on February 7, 2015, the athletes of the Southern University Laboratory
School traveled to the beautiful campus of Grambling State University in Grambling to
compete in the Louisiana Youth Sports Multi-State Basketball Championship; and
WHEREAS, after soundly defeating Red River Junior High of Coushatta by a score
of 41-19 and trouncing General Trass Junior High School of Lake Providence by a score of
45-22, the young men of Southern University Laboratory School completed an undefeated
basketball season by beating the defending Junior High state champions, A.C. Lewis Junior
High School of Ruston, by a score of 52-37; and
WHEREAS, the final victory raised the record for the 2014-2015 season to 22-0, and
the student athletes of Southern University Laboratory School became the one hundred
eighth state championship team in the glorious history of the school; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the individual accomplishments of the
members of this winning team: Terrington Butler, who was named the state of Louisiana
Most Valuable Player for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades; Seviahn Turner, named the
tournament's Most Valuable Player; Deavan Hopkins and Malise Jackson-Green, named to
the All Tournament 1st Team; Shawn Bates, Jr., Jaren Curry, Sedric Curry, Jalen Ferguson,
Gerran Hayes, Tyron Major, Oakley Lewis, Devin Spurlock, Ja'Marcus Triplett, and Michael
Wicker; and Head Coach Kevin Augustine with his assistants, Tina Fountain and Symetress
Bates; and

WHEREAS, the team could not have achieved such a defining season without the
support of Devan Clark, head varsity boys' basketball coach; Dr. Ronnie Harrison, director
of Southern University Laboratory School; Dr. Lurie Young, interim dean of the College of
Education at Southern University Agricultural and Medical College; Rebecca Marshall,
athletic director; and Devora Sulcer, administrative secretary; and
WHEREAS, the students, faculty, alumni, and community join with the student
athletes of Southern University Laboratory School in celebrating an incredible basketball
season and feel unparalleled pride in the accomplishments of the 2014-2015 boys' basketball
program.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the athletes and coaches of the boys'
basketball program at Southern University Laboratory School; does hereby recognize the
outstanding dedication and effort required to achieve an undefeated season and the
championship of the Louisiana Youth Sports Multi-State Basketball Championship in 2015;
and does hereby extend best wishes for continued success in the future.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Dr. Ronnie Harrison.
