SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 121

MILLER AND WILLMOTT 
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To commend Ed Reed on his outstanding high school, college, and professional career and
congratulate him on the occasion of his retirement from the National Football
League.
WHEREAS, Ed Reed attended Destrehan High School in St. Rose, Louisiana, where
he played the position of defensive safety for the Wildcats; and
WHEREAS, he was an all-state selection at defensive back and as a kick returner,
and named Most Valuable Defensive Player in his district by the New Orleans Times-
Picayune; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed totaled eighty-three tackles, seven interceptions, three forced
fumbles, and twelve deflected passes during his senior year while also seeing action as a
running back and quarterback; and
WHEREAS, in addition to football, he was also a member of the Wildcats basketball,
baseball, and track and field squads; and
WHEREAS, a standout track athlete, Mr. Reed was a member of the state champion
4 x 100 meters relay squad, set a high school record throw of 56.94 meters in the javelin, and
recorded a personal-best leap of 7.20 meters in the long jump; and
WHEREAS, he was recruited by the University of Miami in 1997 and was a member
of the football squad that won the 2001 Bowl Championship Series national championship
game in his senior year; and
WHEREAS, during his time with the Hurricanes, Mr. Reed was a two-time All-
American in 2000 and 2001; and
WHEREAS, he holds the record for career interceptions with twenty-one career
interception return yards at three hundred eighty-nine, and interceptions returned for

touchdowns at five; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was awarded the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award
in 2001 and led the nation with nine interceptions and three touchdowns to set a new school
record; and
WHEREAS, he was also a Big East Champion in the javelin throw as a member of
the University of Miami Hurricanes' track and field team; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was selected in the first round of the 2002 National Football
League (NFL) draft by the Baltimore Ravens and played ten seasons with that organization
before signing with the Houston Texans in 2013 and later with the New York Jets; and
WHEREAS, during his professional career, he was selected to the Pro Bowl nine
times and was an All-Pro selection eight times; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was a member of the Baltimore Ravens in 2012 when the
team was the American Football Conference Champion and ultimately won Super Bowl
XLVII with a 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers; and
WHEREAS, his records in the National Football League include longest interception
returned for a touchdown, and he was the first person in NFL history to return an
interception, punt, blocked punt, and fumble for a touchdown; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was named Consensus All-American two times, established
a NFL record for the longest interception return of one hundred eight yards, and is the
Baltimore Ravens all-time career leader in interceptions; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Reed's distinguished career in athletics has brought much honor and
recognition to the state of Louisiana and he is most deserving of public commendations and
congratulations on such a successful and illustrious athletic career.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend and congratulate Ed Reed on his outstanding high school, college, and
professional career and congratulates him on the occasion of his retirement from the
National Football League, does hereby extend a special measure of commendation for his
outstanding accomplishments and his enduring legacy that will forever continue to be a
source of tremendous pride for the citizens of Louisiana, and extends to him best wishes for
continued success in all of his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Ed
Reed.
