SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 48
BY SENATOR ERDEY AND REPRESENTATI VE POPE 
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the
death of Norman Alton Leggette.
WHEREAS, it is with great sadness that the citizens and Legislature of Louisiana has
learned of the passing of Alton Leggette, a distinguished gentleman, renowned coach, civic
leader, and former member of the Livingston Parish School Board on March 29, 2015, at the
age of eighty; and
WHEREAS, Norman Alton Leggette was born on December 20, 1935, and raised in
Holden, Louisiana, where he attended elementary school through high school and later
Southeastern Louisiana University where he majored in physical education, a miraculous
feat in itself after being stricken with polio as a young child; and
WHEREAS, he began his coaching and teaching career at Maurepas, then spent six
years at Holden, his alma mater, and the rest of his career at Denham Springs High School
and with the Livingston Parish School Board; and
WHEREAS, Coach Leggette coached his high school alma mater to the Class C Boys
state championship in 1963, then moved to Denham Springs High School after being heavily
recruited as head basketball coach for thirteen seasons and was named part of the inaugural
Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2011; and
WHEREAS, he received many accolades during his prestigious career that included
District Coach of the Year three times, Parish Coach of the Year four times, and Class C
State Coach of the Year in 1963 and was inducted into the Louisiana High School Athletic
Association Hall of Fame in 1991; and
WHEREAS, throughout his life Alton Leggette was a man of action and his proactive
stance made him a positive force at all levels of his life; his athleticism won him free throw
shooting competitions, he could shoot with either hand, he was an ace softball pitcher until
age thirty-six, and he was a determined athlete and coach which, in turn, made the young
men he coached determined not to let him down; and
WHEREAS, Alton Leggette was the kind of citizen who represents what is good

about Louisiana, a man of wisdom who used his many talents, integrity, and passion for his
community, parish, and state to change Louisiana and its citizens for the better; and 
WHEREAS, with the death of Alton Leggette, the state has lost one of her finest
citizens, a true gentleman who left an indelible mark on the many individuals whose lives
he touched; and
WHEREAS, the death of Alton Leggette has created a tremendous void in his
community, but his lessons and his memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all
who were blessed to have worked with, been coached by, or to just have known him; and
WHEREAS, his love of family was of the utmost importance in his life, and he was
a caring and devoted husband and best friend to the love of his life, his wife of fifty-nine
years, Margaret Hyatt Tycer Leggette; he was a cherished uncle to his loving nephews
Richard Alton Leggette and his wife Cathy, Doug Core and his wife Vickie, and Greg Core
and his wife Dawn; and numerous great nephews, nieces, and relatives; and
WHEREAS, Alton Leggette was a man of great strength and intellect, a caring
individual who has left his mark in Livingston Parish and the state of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,
and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon role models like
Alton Leggette who mold our future generations into responsible young men and women.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express its sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the passing of a true gentlemen and
renowned coach, Norman Alton Leggette.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
celebrate his extraordinary life and commend the rich legacy that Alton Leggette leaves to
the benefit of future generations and acknowledge a life well-spent in the service of his
community, his state, his country, and his God.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to his
wife, Hyatt Leggette.
