2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 90 BY SENATORS MORRELL AND APPEL AND REPRESENTATIVES ABRAMSON, LEGER AND MORENO A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend distinguished and published author, teacher, and artist Brad Richard as the recipient of the 2015 Louisiana Culture Award for Artist of the Year. WHEREAS, Mr. Richard's contributions range from local to national, creating and developing artist outlets and organizations to share the art of writing in many different forms; and WHEREAS, Mr. Richard is a department chair at Lusher Charter School where he founded, developed, and taught creative writing to students in sixth through twelfth grade for nine years; and WHEREAS, Mr. Richard also teaches at Kenyon College Summer Workshop for teachers, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, and Washington University in St. Louis; and WHEREAS, at Lusher, Mr. Richard's dedication to his students is evident by the numerous awards and scholarships his students have received; and WHEREAS, Mr. Richard founded street, Lusher's high school literary journal, which was awarded the highest award by the 2014 National Council of Teachers of English Program to recognize excellence in student literary magazines; and WHEREAS, Mr. Richard is a published author of three books: Butcher's Sugar (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2012), Motion Studies (The Word Works, 2011), and Habitations (Portal Press, New Orleans, 2000), which won the 2010 Washington Prize; and WHEREAS, his works appear in numerous major literary journals such as American Letters & Commentary, Barrow Street, Bayou, Gettysburg Review, Guernica, Hayden's Ferry Review, The Hollins Critic, Hunger Mountain, Iowa Review, Literary Imagination, Mississippi Review, North American Review, Passages North, Prairie Schooner, Western Humanities Review, and Witness; and Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 90 ENROLLED WHEREAS, in 2014, Mr. Richard co-curated The Waves Reading Series and continues to do so today; in 2010, he founded and codirected the Southeast Louisiana Writing Region's Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and continues to do so today; in 2007, he founded and codirected the New Orleans New Writers Literary Festival, a literary festival for high school students in the New Orleans region and continues to do so today; and WHEREAS, Mr. Richard embodies all of the finest characteristics of an artist and an educator; he is open, engaging, and has an enduring positive effect on his many students. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend distinguished and published author, teacher, and artist Brad Richard as the recipient of the 2015 Louisiana Culture Award for Artist of the Year and recognizes his inspiring dedication to the education of the youth of Louisiana.
