2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 200 BY SENATORS MORRELL AND CROWE A RESOLUTION To commend certain St. Bernard Parish leaders and residents for their diligent efforts and hard work producing the 2015 Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial Commemoration. WHEREAS, January 8, 2015, marked the 200th anniversary of the American victory at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812; and WHEREAS, the resounding victory secured on the "plains of Chalmette" would have far reaching effects on the country, including transforming the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from one of enmity to friendship, instilling a feeling of self-confidence and national unity, accelerating the development of industry, and paving the way for the future election of Andrew Jackson to the presidency; and WHEREAS, as part of the celebration, local organizers highlighted that the American victory was achieved by the most diverse force to bear arms under the American flag, including U.S. Army regulars, U.S. Navy sailors, local militia who had been citizens of Spain, freemen of color, Choctaw warriors, Baratarian privateers, Napoleonic War veterans from France, and volunteers from Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee; and WHEREAS, people from across the globe traveled to St. Bernard Parish for the celebration of the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans; and WHEREAS, the event marked an unprecedented level of cooperation between St. Bernard Parish government, the lieutenant governor's office, the state Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial Commission, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office, the St. Bernard Port, the St. Bernard Parish School Board, the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department, Elaine P. Nunez Community College, the National Park Service, the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the Houston office of the Consul General of the United Kingdom, area foundations, civic organizations, local businesses, private citizens, and volunteers. Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 200 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize and commend those St. Bernard Parish residents and area leaders who worked to make this year's bicentennial celebration a success, including Parish President David Peralta, Michael Bayham, Katherine Tommaseo, William deMarigny Hyland, Michael Gorbaty, David Gorbaty, and Ryan Fink from St. Bernard Parish Government; the Honorable Henson Moore of the state Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial Commission; Chief Thomas Stone of the St. Bernard Parish Fire Department; Wanda and Clyde Alcorn, Alvin Jones, Lena Nunez, Faith Moran, Claire Henderson, Lauren Gibson, and Jennifer Heinz of the St. Bernard Parish Tourism Commission; Archbishop Gregory Aymond of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Rev.
