Commends David Nodier on his volunteer efforts following the devastating earthquakes in Nepal. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend David Nodier on his volunteer efforts following the devastating earthquakes 3 in Nepal. 4 WHEREAS, David Nodier, a twenty-two year old native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, 5 arrived in Nepal in March 2015, to teach English at a Buddhist monastery near the village 6 of Dollu on the outskirts of Kathmandu; and 7 WHEREAS, prior to his arrival in Nepal, he received ten weeks of wilderness 8 training and is a trained emergency medical technician with a wilderness certification; and 9 WHEREAS, on April 25, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8-magnitude on the 10 Richter scale struck Nepal; and 11 WHEREAS, when the earthquake hit, Mr. Nodier was in Kathmandu, one of the 12 region's most heavily devastated areas; and 13 WHEREAS, more than eight thousand five hundred people were killed and more 14 than twenty-one thousand were injured, and on May 12, a second earthquake, measuring 7.2- 15 magnitude hit killing at least one hundred seventeen people and injuring over two thousand 16 five hundred; and 17 WHEREAS, seeing the damage and devastation firsthand, Mr. Nodier put his training 18 to use and remained in Nepal working with Volunteer Initiative Nepal and the American Red Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 201 SLS 15RS-3691 ORIGINAL 1 Cross to manage transportation of goods throughout various villages in the area and to 2 identify the areas most in need of aid; and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Nodier set up a crowd-funding page through GoFundMe.com to 4 raise money for the humanitarian efforts in Nepal and has raised eight thousand dollars in 5 the past month with a goal to raise fifteen thousand dollars; and 6 WHEREAS, the donations received have provided 30-kilogram sacks of rice, dal, oil, 7 and tarpaulins to various communities, as well as food and medication to an orphanage in 8 Futung, food to a village in Sankhu, tin for a roof in Dakshinkali, and tarpaulins to a few 9 villages in the district of Nuwakot; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Nodier hopes to raise enough money to charter a helicopter and 11 deliver supplies to the most remote and isolated communities; and 12 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, 13 and the overall vitality of American society depends, in great measure, upon the dedication 14 of people like David Nodier; and 15 WHEREAS, it is fitting to herald the contributions of Louisiana's accomplished 16 youth like David Nodier, a model citizen who represents the best and brightest of the state. 17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 18 does hereby commend David Nodier on his valiant and selfless efforts to assist the people 19 of Nepal in the wake of such devastating and catastrophic events. 20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 21 David Nodier.
