2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 201 BY SENATOR JOHNS A RESOLUTION To commend David Nodier on his volunteer efforts following the devastating earthquakes in Nepal. WHEREAS, David Nodier, a twenty-two year old native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, arrived in Nepal in March 2015, to teach English at a Buddhist monastery near the village of Dollu on the outskirts of Kathmandu; and WHEREAS, prior to his arrival in Nepal, he received ten weeks of wilderness training and is a trained emergency medical technician with a wilderness certification; and WHEREAS, on April 25, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8-magnitude on the Richter scale struck Nepal; and WHEREAS, when the earthquake hit, Mr. Nodier was in Kathmandu, one of the region's most heavily devastated areas; and WHEREAS, more than eight thousand five hundred people were killed and more than twenty-one thousand were injured, and on May 12, a second earthquake, measuring 7.2- magnitude hit killing at least one hundred seventeen people and injuring over two thousand five hundred; and WHEREAS, seeing the damage and devastation firsthand, Mr. Nodier put his training to use and remained in Nepal working with Volunteer Initiative Nepal and the American Red Cross to manage transportation of goods throughout various villages in the area and to identify the areas most in need of aid; and WHEREAS, Mr. Nodier set up a crowd-funding page through GoFundMe.com to raise money for the humanitarian efforts in Nepal and has raised eight thousand dollars in the past month with a goal to raise fifteen thousand dollars; and WHEREAS, the donations received have provided 30-kilogram sacks of rice, dal, oil, and tarpaulins to various communities, as well as food and medication to an orphanage in Futung, food to a village in Sankhu, tin for a roof in Dakshinkali, and tarpaulins to a few villages in the district of Nuwakot; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 201 ENROLLED WHEREAS, Mr. Nodier hopes to raise enough money to charter a helicopter and deliver supplies to the most remote and isolated communities; and WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depends, in great measure, upon the dedication of people like David Nodier; and WHEREAS, it is fitting to herald the contributions of Louisiana's accomplished youth like David Nodier, a model citizen who represents the best and brightest of the state. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend David Nodier on his valiant and selfless efforts to assist the people of Nepal in the wake of such devastating and catastrophic events.
