2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 37 BY SENATORS DORSEY-COLOMB AND BROOME A RESOLUTION To commend Southern University and to recognize Wednesday, April 22, 2015, as Southern University Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-fifth year of excellence in higher education; and WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget, and the university was relocated to Baton Rouge in 1914; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to become one of the country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging from certificates to doctorates; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the nation's only historically black 1890 land-grant university system; and WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and Southern's alumni have gone on to make significant contributions to their chosen professions throughout the state, nation, and world; and WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-five years. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride and honor that Southern University brings to the state of Louisiana, does hereby express sincere appreciation for its singular Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 37 ENROLLED legacy of excellence, does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 22, 2015, as Southern University Day at the Louisiana State Capitol, and does hereby extend to the entire Southern family best wishes upon this memorable day.
