2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 58 BY SENATOR WHITE A RESOLUTION To recognize May 2015 as "Building Safety Month". WHEREAS, for the past thirty-five years, the International Code Council has celebrated advances in constructing safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient buildings and homes; and WHEREAS, the International Code Council utilizes a governmental consensus process that coordinates local, state, and federal officials with expertise in the building environment to create and implement building codes of the highest quality to protect Americans in the buildings where they live, learn, work, worship, and play; and WHEREAS, the International Codes are the most widely adopted building safety, energy, and fire prevention codes in the United States and include safeguards to protect the public from natural disasters such as hurricanes, snow storms, tornadoes, wildfires, floods, and earthquakes; and WHEREAS, Building Safety Month was founded by the International Code Council and is celebrated worldwide during the month of May as a public awareness campaign to help individuals, families, and businesses understand the process of creating safe and sustainable structures; and WHEREAS, the campaign is presented by the International Code Council and its members, along with a diverse partnership of professionals from the building construction, design and safety community, corporations, government agencies, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations to support and bring awareness to the need for safe and sustainable structures where citizens live, learn, work, worship, and play; and WHEREAS, the theme for 2015, "Resilient Communities Start with Building Codes", encourages all Americans to raise awareness of the importance of building safety and resilient construction, fire prevention, disaster mitigation, water safety and conversation, Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 58 ENROLLED energy efficiency, and new technologies in the construction industry; and WHEREAS, Building Safety Month encourages appropriate steps to take to ensure that the places we live, learn, work, worship, and play are safe and sustainable, and recognizes that countless lives have been saved due to the implementation of safety codes by local authorities and state agencies; and WHEREAS, each year, in observance of Building Safety Month, Americans are asked to consider projects to improve building safety and sustainability at home and in the community, and to acknowledge the essential services provided by local and state building departments, fire prevention bureaus, and federal agencies in protecting lives and property; and WHEREAS, all communities need building codes to protect their citizens from fires, weather-related events, and structural collapse, and model building codes are society's best way of protecting homes, offices, schools, manufacturing facilities, stores, and entertainment venues from such disasters. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize May 2015 as "Building Safety Month". PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE Page 2 of 2
