SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 80

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. Commends Taiwan for the positive economic relations and
friendship with Louisiana.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To commend Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, for positive economic
3 relations and friendship with the state of Louisiana and to encourage the continuation
4 and further strengthening of these ties.
5 WHEREAS, in 2014, Governor Bobby Jindal and a senior delegation from Louisiana
6 visited Taiwan highlighting the significance that the state of Louisiana places on this
7 important Asian market for Louisiana goods; and
8 WHEREAS, Taiwan and Louisiana have maintained a strong, friendly, and
9 long-standing relationship; and
10 WHEREAS, the relationship between Taiwan and Louisiana includes international
11 trade ties, investment ties, ports ties, and cultural ties; and
12 WHEREAS, Taiwan ranked as Louisiana's 32nd largest export market and its 46th
13 largest importer nation in 2014; and
14 WHEREAS, both exports and imports in 2014 between Taiwan and Louisiana
15 experienced more than a twenty percent increase over the previous year; and
16 WHEREAS, three companies from Taiwan have investments in Louisiana, namely,
17 Dexco Polymers L.P., Formosa Plastics Corporation, and Nan Ya Plastics Corporation of
18 America; and

1 WHEREAS, Louisiana is a leading state in the United States in attracting foreign
2 direct investment; and
3 WHEREAS, Louisiana welcomes increased international investment and increased
4 trade with Taiwan; and
5 WHEREAS, the year 2015 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the sister-state
6 relationship between Taiwan and Louisiana and the thirty-fifth anniversary of the sister-city
7 relationship between the city of Taichung and the city of Baton Rouge; and
8 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana welcomes reciprocal visits between the Taipei
9 Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, Texas, and the Louisiana Department of
10 Economic Development; and
11 WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana welcomes the Taipei Economic and Cultural
12 Office and other representatives from Taiwan to establish a presence in our state.
13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
14 does hereby commend Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, for its positive
15 economic relations and friendship with the state of Louisiana and hereby encourages the
16 continuation and further strengthening of these ties.
17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
18 Louis M. Huang, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston,
19 Texas.
