Designates May 10-16, 2015, as Police Week in the state of Louisiana. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To designate May 10 through May 16, 2015, as "Police Week" in the state of Louisiana. 3 WHEREAS, members of law enforcement agencies provide a vital public service 4 with essential roles in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Louisiana; and 5 WHEREAS, there are approximately nine hundred thousand law enforcement 6 officers serving their communities across the United States; and 7 WHEREAS, police and peace officers protect citizens twenty-four hours a day and 8 seven days a week; and 9 WHEREAS, nearly sixty thousand assaults against law enforcement officers are 10 reported annually, resulting in approximately sixteen thousand injuries; and 11 WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, more than twenty thousand law 12 enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, the names of fallen public servants are engraved on the walls of the 15 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and 16 WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of all officers killed in the line of duty will be 17 honored during the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund 27 th Annual 18 Candlelight Vigil, on the evening of May 13, 2015; and Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 96 SLS 15RS-1452 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, May 15, 2015, is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor 2 of all fallen officers and their families, the United States flag is flown at half-staff in many 3 locations throughout our great nation; and 4 WHEREAS, law enforcement officers are guardians of life and property, defenders 5 of individual rights, warriors in the war against crime, and they merit sincere commendations 6 for their steadfast commitment to secure and preserve the welfare and safety of their fellow 7 citizens. 8 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 9 does hereby designate May 10 through May 16, 2015, as "Police Week" in the state of 10 Louisiana, and commends the state's law enforcement officers for their noble and exemplary 11 accomplishments, and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the tremendous honor 12 and pride they bring to Louisiana citizens. 13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 14 Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police.
