HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 8

A RESOLUTION
To posthumously commend Dr. Jesse Nealand Stone, Jr., upon the unveiling of his judicial
portrait at the Southern University Shreveport Museum of Art.
WHEREAS, on February 18, 2016, the judicial portrait of the late Dr. Jesse Nealand
Stone, Jr., will be officially unveiled in the city of Shreveport and thereafter permanently
displayed on the Judicial Wall of Fame at the Southern University Law Center in Baton
Rouge; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Stone was recognized for his achievement as the first African
American appointed to serve on the Louisiana Supreme Court; he served as associate justice
pro tem in 1979; and
WHEREAS, throughout his career, Dr. Stone, born in Gibsland, Louisiana, and a
resident of Shreveport and Baton Rouge, advanced civil rights from the bar, in the political
arena, within educational administration, and from the bench; and
WHEREAS, in 1971-1972, Dr. Stone became the first Southern University Law
Center alumnus to serve as dean of the Southern University School of Law; he was the first
African American assistant state superintendent of education in the Louisiana Department
of Education, where he served from 1972-1974; and in 1975 he was appointed as the first
president of the Southern University System; and
WHEREAS, the portrait of Dr. Stone is a gift to the Law Center from Chancellor
Emeritus B. K. Agnihotri, Vice Chancellor Russell L. Jones, and retired Professor Winston
Riddick in honor of their mentor and friend.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby join with family, friends, colleagues, and supporters
of the Southern University Law Center and Southern University Shreveport, Louisiana, in

honoring the late Dr. Jesse N. Stone, Jr.; and does hereby herald his legacy of inspiring
commitment to excellence in higher education throughout the Southern University System
and the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of Dr. Jesse Nealand Stone, Jr.
