A RESOLUTION
To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the
death of Amos Cormier Jr.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the citizens of
Plaquemines Parish and the state of Louisiana learned of the death of Plaquemines Parish
President, Amos Cormier Jr. on June 16, 2016, at the age of seventy; and
WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was born at Hotel Dieu Hospital on November 14,
1945; and
WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Lucy Barrois
Cormier; and
WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a loving, and dedicated husband to his wife of
forty-five years, Aurele Moinet Cormier, and a committed father to five children, Amos
Cormier III, Arthur Cormier, Mack Cormier, Jene' Cormier, and Meran Cormier Simonson;
and
WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a devoted family man and a man of faith; and 
WHEREAS, he graduated from Port Sulphur High School and Southeastern
Louisiana University with a baccalaureate degree in education; and 
WHEREAS, he received his Master of Education Administration and his Plus 30 in
Guidance and Counseling from Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, he was beloved by his family and constituents; and
WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a lifelong public servant, educator and coach in
both football and baseball, having been named as a Louisiana state coach of the year in both
sports; and
WHEREAS, he taught and coached at Port Sulphur High School, Delta Heritage
Academy and at Buras High School where his team won the 1990 AA Louisiana state
championship; and

WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a committed leader in the community; and
WHEREAS, he was elected to two terms as parish councilman, serving his
hometown of Port Sulphur for eight years before being elected Plaquemines Parish President
in 2015; and
WHEREAS, he also served as council chairman and recreation director for
Plaquemines Parish; and 
WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was elected to the
position of Plaquemines Parish President, and was a great leader for the residents of that
parish; and
WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. led Plaquemines Parish with passion and worked
tirelessly to meet the needs of residents, while also working effectively with the parish
council; and 
WHEREAS, as a friend of the region, Amos Cormier Jr. was instrumental in assisting
with cooperative regional governmental strategies; and 
WHEREAS, Amos Cormier Jr. was a committed and dedicated citizen of Louisiana
who worked tirelessly on a multitude of business, civic, political, and religious causes
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, because of his numerous accomplishments in public and private life,
Amos Cormier Jr. will be forever remembered by the people and friends of Louisiana for his
integrity, dignity, courage, and the joy he left in the hearts of all who knew him.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Amos Cormier Jr.
and extends enduring appreciation for the outstanding service and many accomplishments
by him for the good of the people of Plaquemines Parish, the state of Louisiana, and the
United States of America.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
family of Amos Cormier Jr.
