SCHOOLS: Prohibits schools from holding membership in certain interscholastic
extracurricular and cocurricular athletic associations or organizations

2To enact R.S. 17:176(G), relative to school membership in athletic associations; to prohibit
3 schools from holding membership in certain interscholastic extracurricular and
4 cocurricular athletic associations or organizations; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 17:176(G) is hereby enacted to read as follows:
7 ยง176. Extracurricular activities; interscholastic athletics; participation; standards;
8 prohibitions; filming or videotaping; definitions

10 G. A public school or nonpublic school approved by the State Board of
11 Elementary and Secondary Education that receives state funds shall not be a member
12 of any interscholastic extracurricular and cocurricular athletic association or
13 organization that subdivides schools into select admission and non-select admission
14 schools for athletic playoff competitions and in doing so, discriminates among
15 schools on the basis of gender, race, and religion.

Abstract: Prohibits public and approved nonpublic schools from holding membership in
certain interscholastic extracurricular and cocurricular athletic associations or
organizations.
Proposed law prohibits a public or approved nonpublic school that receives public funds
from holding membership in any interscholastic extracurricular and cocurricular athletic
association or organization that subdivides schools into select admission and non-select
admission schools for athletic playoff competitions and in doing so, discriminates among
schools on the basis of gender, race, and religion.

Summary of Amendments Adopted by House
The Committee Amendments Proposed by House Committee on Education to the
original bill:
1. Expand prohibition in proposed law to cover membership in a cocurricular
athletic association or organization.
2. Add stipulation that in subdividing schools for playoff competitions, such
association or organization is discriminating among schools on the basis of
gender, race, and religion.
