A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To express the condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of former state
representative and lieutenant governor Robert L. "Bobby" Freeman.
WHEREAS, with the death of former state representative and lieutenant governor
Robert L. "Bobby" Freeman on Monday, May 16, 2016,  at the age of eighty-two, Louisiana
has lost one of the most notable figures in the rich chronicles of Louisiana politics; and
WHEREAS, Robert L. "Bobby" Freeman was born on April 27, 1934; and
WHEREAS, Bobby Freeman was a very talented boxer; as a boxer for Plaquemine
High School, he captured the state championship title in 1951; in the 1950s, he was a
member of the Louisiana State University boxing team and was a two-time National
Collegiate Athletic Association runner-up in his weight class; and

WHEREAS, in honor of his outstanding contributions and to give lasting recognition
to his distinguished boxing record, Mr. Freeman was inducted into the Louisiana State
University Athletic Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, after college, Mr. Freeman became a lawyer and practiced in
Plaquemine; and
WHEREAS, he served in the House of Representatives from 1968 until 1980, fully
using every opportunity to serve the parishes of Iberville, Pointe Coupee, and West Baton
Rouge; and
WHEREAS, as a state representative, Mr. Freeman steadfastly endeavored to
improve the welfare of the citizens of Louisiana and served on numerous committees,
including serving as chairman of the House Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations
and as a member of the House Committee on Affairs of the House, the House Committee
on Judiciary A, the House Committee on Appropriations, and the House Committee on
House and Governmental Affairs; and
WHEREAS, during the 1970s, he was a gubernatorial floor leader; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Freeman had a passion for serving the people of Louisiana; from
1980 until 1988, he served as lieutenant governor; and
WHEREAS, he always had the state's best interest at heart, and he set a precedent
as lieutenant governor, becoming the first to have responsibility for the Department of
Culture, Recreation and Tourism; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, he returned to Plaquemine to serve as a city judge, a position
he held until 1996; and
WHEREAS, the death of Mr. Freeman has left a great void and created a genuine
sense of sorrow in all who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Freeman leaves behind a rich and unique legacy and is greatly
missed by all whose lives he touched through his commitment to public service and his
dedication to the citizens of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of former state representative and
lieutenant governor Robert L. "Bobby" Freeman; does hereby recognize and record for
posterity his notable accomplishments and singular contributions during his tenure as a

distinguished member of the Louisiana House of Representatives and as lieutenant governor;
and does hereby extend enduring appreciation for the pride and honor that this wonderful
man will forever bring to his family and friends, his community, and the state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of Robert L. "Bobby" Freeman.
