ENROLLED 2016 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 187 BY REPRESENTATIVE FALCONER A RESOLUTION To commend Samuel Sams Jr., on the occasion of his ninety-fifth birthday, for his service as a Tuskegee Airman during World War II. WHEREAS, Samuel Sams Jr. was born to Rev. Samuel Sams and Mrs. Annie Husband Sams, in Oakdale, Louisiana, on May 25, 1921; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sams attended Mandeville Elementary and St. Tammany High School in Slidell before joining the United States Air Corps, where he became a corporal and served in World War II in the 99th Fighter Squadron, otherwise known as the Tuskegee Airmen; and WHEREAS, the 99th Fighter Squadron was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations for outstanding tactical air support and aerial combat in the 12th Air Force in Italy, before joining the 332nd Fighter Group; and WHEREAS, on May 12, 1945, Mr. Sams received a lapel button for being missing in action for eleven days; and WHEREAS, after serving his country, Mr. Sams completed his education and married Marian Ducre Sams, to whom he has been married for many years and with whom he has raised three children, Andrew, April, and B.J.; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sams serves on the Deacon Board for the Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, and is also one of the original Fireside Gospel Singers. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby, upon the occasion of his ninety-fifth birthday, commend Samuel Sams Jr. for his courageous service as a Tuskegee Airman during World War II and also expresses sincere gratitude for Mr. Sam's lifelong record of distinguished service to the state of Louisiana and the United States of America.
