HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 37
BY REPRESENTATIVE DUSTIN MILLER
A RESOLUTION
To commend the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar.
WHEREAS, the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar educates senior citizens with
information necessary in their daily lives; and
WHEREAS, in March of 2009, Gerald Greene had a vision of bringing the elderly
to the forefront of society and began to seek ways to help improve the lives of senior
citizens; and
WHEREAS, a board for the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar was formed
through the Council on Aging with approximately twenty-five elderly citizens, the police
chief, a liaison officer with the Magnolia Peace Officers, and a secretary; and
WHEREAS, on August 21, 2009, the first Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar
was held at the Opelousas Housing Authority; more than three hundred senior citizens
attended; and
WHEREAS, many physicians, attorneys, audiologists, dentists, and other
professionals have participated in the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar to help spread
information to senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar has
grown in many ways; senior citizens are provided with a wealth of information, healthy
meals, entertainment, and door prizes at seminars; and
WHEREAS, in 2013, Rachael Fruge Jones joined the Opelousas Elderly Awareness
Seminar to assist its president, Gerald Greene; and
WHEREAS, in 2014, Ms. Jones became vice president of the seminar; and

WHEREAS, the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar caters to senior citizens in
many ways, including hosting fan drives, blanket drives, food drives, providing
transportation and lawn services for senior citizens, and advising senior citizens on home
safety.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar
and does hereby recognize and record for posterity the wonderful services it provides to
senior citizens.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Gerald Greene, president of the Opelousas Elderly Awareness Seminar.
